What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is an effective treatment used to address pain and movement issues associated with trigger points. Needles are inserted into the affected muscles (also called trigger points), leading to a “twitch response” (a quick contraction of the muscle), followed by a long period of relaxation. Dry needling can also have a calming effect on the nervous system, which may reduce muscle spasm and pain.

FAQs

New to dry needling? Read the FAQ below to get answers to common questions.

Dry needling can be used to relieve muscle spasm, tension, reduce pain, improve range of motion, and improve blood flow to assist with healing.

Most patients feel only mild discomfort or a quick twitch during treatment, followed by relief of tension. It’s normal to be sore for up to a day or two afterwards.

Dry needling involves inserting fine needles to affected muscles or trigger points. Immediately after insertion, it leads to a “twitch response”, or a sensation that causes tight muscles to contract, followed by an immediate, long lasting relaxation. This process leads to decreased muscle tightness, increased blood flow and reduced pain.

At Pillar Kinetic, we provide dry needling for Las Vegas area athletes and active adults – however, dry needling is not for everyone.

You should not get dry needling if you…

  • have unmanaged blood-clotting
  • have a compromised immune system
  • have a skin condition
  • are pregnant
  • have a fear of needles

If you have any additional questions on whether dry needling is right for you, we encourage you to contact our Las Vegas PT team.

Typically, each dry needling session takes about thirty minutes. However, the amount of time can vary depending on the area of the body being addressed, and the person receiving the treatment.

Dry needling involves the use of thin filiform needles. These needles are thin enough to penetrate the skin.

Dry needling targets muscle trigger points to relieve pain, improve functional range of motion, increase blood flow and vessel dilation, and send input into the nervous system to block pain signal transmission. Acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine beliefs including effecting Qi, energy meridians, and ying/yang balance. Dry Needling and Acupuncture both use the same type of needles to achieve their desired results.
