Arthritis physical therapy in Las Vegas

Doing less is not the safer choice.

If you have been told your joint pain is wear and tear and you should do less, that advice is out of date. Joints are living tissue that respond to load. Doing less makes them weaker and more painful, not safer.

Who this is for

  • Knee or hip osteoarthritis, diagnosed or suspected
  • Morning stiffness that eases within thirty minutes of moving
  • Pain on stairs, getting out of a chair, or after sitting
  • Anyone told to wait until they are ready for a replacement
  • People preparing for joint replacement who want to go in stronger

What the scan actually means

Joint changes on an X-ray correlate poorly with pain. Plenty of people have significant changes and no symptoms, and plenty have severe pain with a near-normal scan. What predicts how you feel is the strength and capacity of the muscles around the joint, and that is something you can change at any age.

What the first visit involves

We measure what the joint can currently do, test the muscles around it, and establish a starting load that does not flare you up. Expect progressive strength work, graded walking, and a plan that gets harder on purpose as you tolerate it.

Frequently asked questions

  • Will exercise wear my joint out faster?

No. Progressive loading improves cartilage health and reduces pain in the research we have. What damages joints is a long period of doing nothing, which costs you muscle, bone density and confidence at the same time.

  • Is it worth doing this if I am going to need a replacement anyway?

Yes, and it is one of the better uses of your time. Stronger people recover faster from joint replacement and leave hospital sooner. Some people who build enough capacity decide to postpone the surgery.
